Black Friday has come and gone.
Cyber Monday is finally over.
Are you ready for the chaos of Christmas, the hectic pace of Hanukkah, and all the other holidays?
If you’re like me, you are frantic to get everything done and find yourself feeling the time crunch. That can be stressful. Right? What happens when our lives get stressful?
What happens when you’re feeling stressed? Eating and drinking can become your outlet, especially with so much easy access during this time of year.
When we are feeling stressed and depleted by the season, our waistlines do not like that and will let us know in no uncertain terms by holding onto fat. This year, take extra fat off your list.
May I suggest a different approach this year? Here are some tips to embrace the holiday season:
1. Change your priorities: So dear reader, I challenge you…this year change your priorities and your expectations for yourself and others. Ask yourself, “what is truly important this year?”
2. Choose to embrace the good feelings of the season. Be mindful and conscious of the love, the warmth, the connections with friends and family.
3. Recognize the bad feelings that can occur. Know it’s ok to feel those, too. When you embrace all of your emotions, you’re giving yourself permission to be who you really are…to live your authentic self. Don’t be afraid to admit that (yes, I’m going to say it) you don’t like the holidays. Do you ever go from Halloween to New Years in fear? Fear of losing control around food? Fear of credit card bills? I’m here to tell you “it’s ok”. Feel those feelings. It’s ok to feel ALL of your emotions.
So this year tell your friends, FB friends too, and family that this is the year you are giving yourself the gift of compassion. It’s really, really ok if you don’t get done some of these things on your to-do list. Get rid of caring what others think. Be yourself this year. And watch how much better you feel. If you love decorating your living space from top to bottom-go for it! But if you get a knot in your stomach just thinking about dragging the decorations out of the attic (does anybody have an attic anymore?), that’s perfectly ok too. Embrace whatever you are feeling. Find the activities that bring you joy and forget the rest.
